Intercultural Competences Across The School Curriculum

Economic and social changes in the European Union bring new opportunities and challenges. Young people need a wider range of competences than ever before to flourish, in a globalised economy and in increasingly diverse societies: linguistic, intercultural and entrepreneurial.

Our project Intercultural Competences Across the School Curriculum aims at:

  • promoting Education for International Understanding;
  • defining principal/general terms connected to Intercultural Education;
  • examining school policies in context of their potential for developing multicultural competences and
  • highlighting the ways in which intercultural  education should be taken into account in school planning, policy development,
  • shaping the whole school environment.

We intend to articulate the major elements of an intercultural approach to education, and situate intercultural education within the Secondary School Curriculum through assessing and reviewing school programs on every subject and identifying diversity and multicultural competences.

By enhancing a system of Intercultural Education and including its elements in all parts of the curriculum as well as in out-of-school/class activities we will be able to:

  • raise pupils’ awareness of their own culture and attune them to the fact that there are other ways of behaving and other value systems;
  • develop respect for life-styles different from their own so that young people can understand and appreciate each other;
  • enable all pupils to speak for themselves and articulate their cultures and histories;
  • help pupils understand the links between their own lives and those of people throughout the world and engage pupils in what would otherwise be abstract and distant issues, making these complex issues more immediate, real and accessible;
  • motivate pupils through personal contacts, direct experience, 'real' classroom activities and materials.

Our project also intends to contribute to facilitating the

  • renewal,

  • production,

  • dissemination and

  • exchange of teaching tools and materials for Intercultural education.

  •

The project is designed to help those concerned with Intercultural education, develop more teaching aids and try to improve their quality.

The project is to be implemented in two years.

We intend to equally focus on pupil involvement and pedagogical issues within our project. The project will be integrated into both the curriculum/learning activities of the participating pupils and into the ongoing activities in each of the participating organisations.

We hope that as a result of our partnership, its participants will

  • improve their ability to communicate constructively in different environments,
  • show tolerance,
  • express and understand different viewpoints, and
  • feel empathy.

They also will

  • value diversity and respect others, and
  • be prepared both to overcome prejudices and to compromise

because such competences can be created on the basis of collaboration, assertiveness and integrity.
